Mr Barcelona

Carles Puyol’s leadership and work rate in the centre of Barcelona’s defence has been as vital to his club’s success as the attacking players in the side. Not only has he assisted in the development of centre-back partner Gerard Pique, he has provided a ‘never say die’ attitude that has made Victor Valdes’ job in goal so comfortable.

A player who has willingly shifted to the right-back position when needed, he continues to offer the same professionalism and courageous performances that has seen him excel to one of Europe’s leading centre-backs. Highlighting his desire to do what’s best for the team, Puyol was asked to play on the right side of defence in Barcelona’s 3-1 over Real Madrid in the recent El Clasico. The mid-game switch in tactics by Pep Guardiola meant Dani Alves was allowed push forward permanently and form a far more solid midfield to counter Madrid’s. Puyol, as always, continued to perform tirelessly and fearlessly, rallying his side after the early shock goal.

Similarly, you’d have to go back over two years to the last time Barcelona lost a league game with Puyol and Pique starting for the side. He brings the best out of Gerard Pique, who, in turn, allows for a more confident performance from those ahead of him – particularly Sergio Busquets.

It should be noted that following Barcelona’s terrible season prior to Pep Guardiola taking over, Puyol had considered leaving the club. Had it not been for the completely contrasting Gerard Pique, the club would not have easily the best centre-back partnership in world football. The young, former Manchester United defender managed to bring the best out of Puyol, just as the veteran facilitated Pique’s rise and into an international starter, rather than just a back-up.

The two have been present in both Barcelona’s Champions League final wins, however not partnering one another on either occasions. As has been mentioned, Puyol, serving on the right in the 2009 final, continued to do the shirt proud. The entire back-line in fact, which at the time consisted of Yaya Toure, performed outstandingly. The made sure Manchester United hardly went within range of Valdes’ goal and ultimately emerged as impressive winners.
